Consumerism has pushed many of us to give up our core values and become constant buyers of the things introduced to us through vast media campaigns.
I’ve been there, done that, but one day I decided to make some important changes in my life and return back to the basics – choose minimalism over consumerism. And I’ve found it much more meaningful and fulfilling to live this way.
Why choose minimalism?
Minimalism is an intentional choice to have less material stuff in your life. It brings the most important things to the spotlight and declutters your surroundings from the unnecessary items.
By keeping things very simple and minimizing the number of material things in your life to the essentials, you can concentrate better on the most meaningful areas of life.
Although, minimalism doesn’t require you to give up all material possessions. The main idea of it is to make the intention of buying something very conscious. By doing so, you will be able to deliberately choose what you really need instead of what you thought (or were influenced to think) you need.
Decluttering your space and mind
Do you know the good feeling that comes after you declutter your workspace – it seems that by doing this simple action you also declutter your mind and make more space for new ideas.
Expand this into the bigger picture – imagine what would happen if you get rid of all the things that have been hanging around for years, some even decades. Simplifying your surroundings allows you to feel in control and has a direct effect on the way you feel, work and live.
Consumerism has led us to believe that happiness is in the material things. Minimalism allows you to achieve happiness by living life and enjoying the precious moments of it. It completely changes our mindset, helps to live in the moment and grow as individuals.
The fake idea of freedom has led us all to consumerism: buying expensive things to fill the void that usually appears from not knowing what to do in your life.
Trust me, no material thing has ever fixed that void, only made it worse. Minimalism can help you achieve freedom from being trapped in consumerism, on which we’ve built our lives around so closely.
It’s frightening to come back to the basics, I know. But once you are there, there is nothing to fear, just pure freedom: from fear, from clutter, from overwhelm.
How to start
I wanted to start a minimalist lifestyle a couple of times, but in the beginning, it never really worked for me. Then one day it just got me. I felt as I would draw in consumerism.
So I gave away a lot of my things, and I installed Zuper. This app helped me to get an overview of my purchases. It really helped me to see how much I am spending every month and it got me a clearer understanding that I could definitely spend less.

This is our take on the minimalism topic. As with all changes in life, it is much easier to implement it gradually. Give yourself time to adapt to the new way of thinking.
Remember – any material thing that you give up is easy to replace, whereas the most important things in life, such as family, friends, and health are irreplaceable. Why concentrate on the material things so much then?
